Simple Termite Control Measures That Can Be Done At Home
Termite control has always been the job of a professional pest control provider but it does not mean that you cannot do some termite pest control measures at home. Even a mother or any family members can do certain termite control measures. Here are some simple termite control measures that can be done at home:
1. Get rid of the food source of termites.Remove any rotten or waterlogged planks from your house and garden sheds and seal any gaps that may provide access to softer internal woods. By doing so, you can drastically reduce the number of termites you may encounter at home. Termites love to eat on soft and damp woods therefore make sure to avoid such occurances.
2. Create baits for the termites.Put a damp wood outside the house as bait and when the termites starts to feast on them, gather them and burn them.
3. Plant certain plants in your area such as chrysanthemums and vetiver grass. Chrysanthemums contan a natural insecticide Pyrethrum which is used by big chemical control products but is a synthesized version. Planting these flowers around the house can definitely add a layer of protection from many pests. You can also make a pest control tea out of it by steeping dried flowers in warm water for an hour or so, and then straining the liquid into a sprayer. Also, one can apply directly to the area in question or to the insects themselves. Vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides), on the other hand, is a species of grass native to India that has been shown to have repellent qualities against insects like termites. It would be worth a try to plant a border of this decorative grass around the house.
4. The use of tobacco. Bags of cheap, shredded tobacco are to be used. Sprinkle them around your house or in your basement. But then you cannot get much penetration into the area where termites live. As with the Pyrethrum, you can make a nicotine tea which can be sprayed onto an area that you want to prevent termites from occupying.
5. Apply neem oil to termite-infested areas like the way you would to with other insecticides. Neem oil (Azadirachta indica) is a very popular natural insecticide made out of pressing the oil from the seed of the neem tree.
6. Boric acid use. Sprinkle boric acid around your house in its powdered form or you can also make a solution of boric acid and propylene glycol, and soak potentially affected wood. Boric acid is a well-known insecticide which has been shown to be safe to use for mammals. It acts to kill insects by messing up with their digestive systems.
7. Use commercially available fungal spores. It is from the species Metarhizium anisopliae. It has been shown to reduce termite populations. It occurs naturally in the soil and some insects have a resistance to it. It does not last very long so reapply after a couple of months.
By doing all of these in the home, you will be able apply practical yet can be effective control measures. If the situation is beyond your control, do not hesitate to call on your nearest pest control provider which offers professional termite infestation solutions.
